To achieve decolonized Global Citizenship Education (GCE), we must re-examine our practices from a decolonial perspective: How do we view other ways of life, societal structures, engagement, peace, justice, or sustainability? In a globalized society, how can we build a more sustainable and just world together in an equitable manner?
These issues are addressed in the four opinion pieces in this magazine. Prof. Abdi revisits the challenges of the decolonization debate in global citizenship education. Anielka Pieniazek presents global citizenship from alternative sources, in this case from the African Ubuntu philosophy. Lastly, the final two contributions showcase GCE practices from a decolonial perspective. Dr. Susa introduces us to the collective “Gesturing Towards Decolonial Futures.” The contributions of Dr. Pashby, Sund, and Wicker provide tools to approach sustainability from an ethical and decolonial perspective.
