Magazine 2024: Global Citizenship Education in Belgian schools: where do we stand?
In 2023, BeGlobal commissioned a study from KULeuven’s HIVA research institute and the OMER research group at the University of Liège to assess how GCE is integrated into primary and secondary education in Belgium.
In this 2024 edition of the BeGlobal’s Global Citizenship Education magazine, we give the floor to Jan Van Ongevalle, head of this research for HIVA, to comment on the main trends that emerged from the study and to offer recommendations for strengthening global citizenship education in Belgian education.
Key trends:
While the study’s results may not be fully representative due to the limited number of respondents, they highlight three clear trends:
- Many teachers find it challenging to define global citizenship education, which hinders its integration in classrooms.
- Teachers often feel they lack sufficient training to effectively implement global citizenship education.
- There is a growing need for improved and readily available educational materials to integrate global citizenship education in an interdisciplinary manner.
