Documentary: how education can be a powerful driver for peace and recovery
At the end of March 2025, 27 students, teachers, and directors from Ukrainian UNESCO schools traveled to Belgium. They participated in an exchange week with Enabel and seven Flemish and French-speaking UNESCO schools.
The program included workshops on peace education, with themes such as the whole school approach, non-violent communication, and mental resilience. Creative activities helped to discuss trauma, recovery, and hope. Inspiring excursions, such as visits to the European Parliament and museums, were also part of the week.
What is the documentary about?
The documentary “Building paths to Peace” captures this special week. It proposes five ways in which education can contribute to the rebuilding of communities, support mental health, and encourage young people to build peace every day taking into account their own context. It invites everyone to view the school as a true community, where students can engage, take responsibility, and where even the smallest gestures contribute to building a culture of peace.
Why this documentary?
Because peace is not a given. Peace education teaches young people to deal with conflicts, strengthens their empathy and critical thinking, and invites reflection on justice and coexistence. While the Ukrainian participants focused mainly on the recovery of school communities, relationships, and trust, the emphasis in the Belgian schools was on citizenship and dialogue. Sharing insights between both contexts is valuable.
